Over time, prolonged exposure may also cause the wood to dry out, potentially leading to cracking or warping of hull planks and deck structures. Areas away from south-facing windows or those with UV-filtering glass are generally preferable.
Managing Humidity Levels
Wood is a hygroscopic material, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air. Fluctuations in humidity can cause the wood components of a model ship to expand and contract. - Compressed air: Used judiciously and from a distance, compressed air can dislodge dust from hard-to-reach areas. Ensure the air is dry and free of propellants that could leave residues.
- Microfiber cloth: For larger, smooth surfaces like the hull, a clean, dry microfiber cloth can gently wipe away dust without scratching.
When dusting, always work from the top down, allowing dislodged dust to fall away. Avoid using feather dusters, as they tend to merely redistribute dust rather than remove it.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Beyond routine dusting, comprehensive cleaning should be undertaken only when necessary and with caution. Avoid the use of chemical cleaners, polishes, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the delicate finishes, paints, and glues used in model construction. If a more thorough cleaning appears necessary, particularly for stubborn grime, consult with a professional conservator or contact the model's artisan for specific guidance.
Periodically inspect the model for any signs of wear, such as loose rigging, detached components, or changes in the wood's appearance. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant problems. For re-rigging or re-gluing small parts, use glues specifically formulated for model making or those recommended by the original builder.
Handling and Display Considerations
When handling a model ship, always grasp it by the hull, supporting its weight evenly. Avoid touching delicate rigging, masts, or other protruding elements, as these are susceptible to bending or breaking. If the model needs to be moved, ensure a clear path and sufficient space to prevent accidental damage.
The base or stand provided with the model is designed to support its weight and distribute stress appropriately. Ensure the model is seated securely on its stand to prevent accidental tipping. If the model is displayed on a high shelf, consider its stability and the potential for vibrations from foot traffic or nearby doors. A stable, level surface is paramount for long-term display.
